Quality of Life in Waller County

One of the greatest assets within Waller County is the quiet country lifestyle. With plenty of wide-open spaces and quality communities, we offer the best in rural living. There are several 4H clubs throughout the county along with other local little league sports programs for the children and great golf courses for mom and dad. Download a lifestyle brochure.

In addition, Waller County’s location provides a strategic advantage for businesses and residents that want access to one of the largest economic engines in the country, the Houston Metro area, while receiving all of the benefits that a rural location provides. Waller County is situated on I-10 that runs from California to Florida and on Highway 290 connecting Austin to Houston. The Houston Central Business District is approximately 45 miles from Waller County. For those needing to commute, the drive times vary from about thirty minutes to one and a half hours, depending on origin and destination.

Although the County has experienced significant growth over the past decade, residents and business owners are still able to enjoy a safe and tight-knit community lifestyle that is appealing to urban dwellers from Houston and other metropolitan areas. Many rural communities across the nation are losing their young adults, or those between 25 to 44 years of age. Since 1990, Waller County actually saw a slight increase in this group along with a strong increase in the percentage of 45-64 year-olds.

Because of Waller County’s close proximity to Houston, world-class entertainment is close by. Houston is one of five U.S. cities (New York City, Chicago, Seattle and San Francisco being the others) that offer world-class, year-round performing and visual arts—symphony (Houston Symphony Orchestra), opera (Houston Grand Opera), drama (The Alley Theatre), and ballet (Houston Ballet). The area contains the Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Menil Collection, several other museums, and a wide range of commercial galleries as well as professional, semi-pro, and collegiate sports teams. Within an hour drive, Waller County has access to every type of entertainment imaginable. This provides Waller County residences the best of both worlds.

Embracing livable communities

The City of Waller was awarded a Livable Centers planning grant for future transportation infrastructure, which is intended to encourage re-investment within the city limits, promote development of pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use neighborhoods and make transit more feasible.  This type of development is designed to protect air quality and water quality in Waller County by preserving open space and reducing vehicle trips.  The City of Brookshire has submitted its intent to apply to the Texas Main Street Program, also intended to encourage preservation and re-development of the existing downtown area.
