A Ready Workforce

About half the residents in Waller County are working-aged, between 18 to 64, and the population’s age distribution seems to be stable. Many rural communities across the nation are losing their young adults, or those between 25 to 44 years of age. Waller County actually saw a slight increase in this group along with a strong increase in the percentage of 45-64 year-olds. Download complete workforce data provided by the US Census Bureau.

Waller County had the third fastest employment growth in the Houston CMSA from 1990 to 2003. During this time Waller County experienced a 40.9% growth rate with real jobs increasing by 4,264 (Source Texas Workforce Commission). With the recent expansion of Igloo Corporation, an estimated 800 additional jobs will move into the county bringing the total to over 5,000 additional jobs since 1990. In addition to a vibrant workforce within the county, employers have access to a regional workforce of over 2 million workers within the Houston CMSA.

As of February 2003, Texas added 2,488,400 non-farm jobs since January 1990, representing an increase of 36 percent (Source Business and Industry Data Center). Waller County mirrors the Texas trend as ag-based and farming jobs are declining while manufacturing jobs are increasing. Even though manufacturing jobs have declined nationally since January 1990, Waller County continues to grow in the manufacturing sector.

Waller County represents a diverse and experienced workforce. In addition to manufacturing, trained workers are available in a variety of occupations.
